Humans of MyWhoosh: David Patton
David has always seen the world from the saddle of his bike. In his small Ohio town, he runs a bike shop that is less like a business and more like a community hub. Cycling isn’t just a pastime for him: it is a way of life, a bridge to wellness he wants to share with everyone.
Along with the Senior Outreach Division of the Lake County General Health District, David wanted to address the challenges many older adults face when it comes to their health and fitness. He and his team lead initiatives designed to enhance quality of life for senior citizens, and they host cycling sessions using MyWhoosh to do it.
“We wanted something that was easy to use and cost-effective”, David says. “We host the MyWhoosh Cycling sessions five days a week and the response from the community has been overwhelming.” He recalls a particular moment that still makes him smile – “One of our members who is 90-years old hadn’t ridden a bike in decades and she tried MyWhoosh, her face lit up with joy instantly. She was so excited!” David remembers.
“Sometimes we must remind them that it’s time to wrap up because they are so engrossed in riding,” he laughs. The joy on their faces as they explore different routes on MyWhoosh is what drives David and his team. “It’s rewarding to see members so engaged and excited. And it is also a reminder that the sport does not differentiate anybody by their age”
As a cyclist himself, David believes that cycling is one of the best ways to stay fit. He wants to not only inspire the older generation but also reignite the passion for cycling in the Unites States of America, especially among the younger audience.
